Why do small drones use thinner carbon fiber tubes, while larger drones usually require larger-diameter tubes for their arms?
The answer is not determined by drone size alone. Motor thrust, arm length, and mounting method also play important roles.
If the tube is too small or the structure is not designed appropriately, the arm may bend or twist excessively, potentially affecting flight stability.
For this reason, selecting carbon fiber tubes for drone arms should not be based only on weight and appearance. Actual loading and assembly requirements also need to be considered.
During flight, thrust from the motors and propellers creates bending loads in the drone arms, while motor reaction torque and flight maneuvers introduce torsional loads.
Simply put, the arm needs to resist both bending and excessive twisting.
If structural stiffness is insufficient, the motor mounting position may shift and vibration may increase.
Carbon fiber drone-arm design therefore needs to balance weight, bending stiffness, and torsional performance.
When other conditions are similar, increasing tube diameter appropriately can generally improve the bending stiffness of the arm and reduce structural deformation.
However, a larger diameter may also increase weight and occupy more installation space.
The tube diameter therefore needs to match the drone size and motor layout.
Thin-wall tubes are lighter, but they can be more vulnerable to wall damage under clamping or localized compressive loads.
Thicker-wall tubes can generally withstand greater local loads, but they also increase arm weight.
Tube diameter, loading conditions, and connection method should therefore be evaluated together when selecting wall thickness.
With the same tube and loading conditions, a longer arm will generally experience greater bending at its free end.
For this reason, the arm design of a larger drone should not simply use the same tube as a smaller drone with additional length.
Tube diameter, wall thickness, and structural stiffness need to be reassessed.
The performance of a carbon fiber tube depends not only on fiber grade, but also on fiber orientation.
0° fibers are primarily aligned along the tube length and help improve axial and bending performance.
±45° fibers help resist torsional loads.
90° fibers can improve transverse stability of the tube wall.
A suitable combination of different fiber orientations allows the arm to better handle actual flight loads.
Both ends of a drone arm usually need to connect to the motor mount and center frame.
Common solutions include tube clamps, adhesive bonding, and metal connectors.
If drilling or slotting is required in the carbon fiber tube, stress concentration around the machined area should be considered, and local reinforcement may be necessary.
Micro and FPV drones:
These designs place greater emphasis on weight, available space, and impact resistance. For models using tubular arms, smaller-diameter tubes and relatively simple machining solutions may be considered first.
Medium-sized aerial photography and industrial drones:
These drones need to balance arm stiffness with installation stability. Round tubes, square tubes, or other cross-sections can be selected according to motor thrust, arm length, and connection design.
Large agricultural and logistics drones:
Because these drones usually have longer arms and higher loads, tube diameter, wall thickness, fiber layup, and connection areas require more detailed evaluation. Appropriate structural testing should also be performed to confirm safety and reliability.
If a standard carbon fiber tube already meets the required dimensions and performance and can be installed using clamps or similar methods, additional customization may not be necessary.
However, when a project requires a special diameter, specified layup, precision drilling, slotting, or dedicated connection features, custom manufacturing based on engineering drawings may be required.
GBTECH provides carbon fiber tubes in multiple specifications and supports cutting, drilling, CNC machining, and non-standard dimensional customization.
Drone manufacturers can provide arm dimensions, load requirements, mounting drawings, and purchase quantities so that a suitable tube specification and manufacturing solution can be evaluated.
